Living in America Series – Income

“Americans make so much money!”

“All Americans are so rich!”

….huh?

No, no we are not. Not by a long shot.

The average USA citizen makes $61,984. And while that is significantly more than salaries in other countries, particularly Asian countries, that does not mean USA citizens are doing well.

We are not doing well at all.

While talking with different people across the world, it seems like the general misunderstanding is that most Americans make the elite end of the software engineer salary range ($200,000+).

Nope. The average software engineer makes about $110,140. Which is still a lot, from the perspective of someone outside of the USA.

But inside the USA, this is still not enough to get by with the national averages found throughout my research.

Everything seems to get misconstrued in a simple way. People in different countries, say China, see the salary and impose that salary on the Chinese cost of living. Instead of researching and incorporating the USA cost of living in relation to the average salary.

That is a VERY big difference. How big exactly? Lets start with the basics, groceries.
