So That Just Happened

This isn’t political, breathe. This is in regards to an irksome observation I have had a time or two over the past year that has resulted in me needing to make significant changes to my Freelance business. I would be offended, but that would be an investment in the corporate world that I promised myself I would never do again. But what

What Happened?

I need to “re-brand”. Not from scratch, but my title and the way I describe my services. See, I am (was) what I call (called) a Data Specialist. Which encapsulated all of my data expertise without overlapping into other roles. HOWEVER! Over the last year that job title has been watered down and now shoved into a space between a Data Analyst and a Data Engineer.

What Now?

Now I am a Unified Data Ecosystem Specialist (UDES). Well, I will be once I finish changing it wherever I have a virtual presence.

Thats it. I am not holding onto anger, I am not panicking, I am not letting it get to me. I am thankful I was able to discover it early. I like my new title. I am looking forward to this making me stand out even more to my (future) clients.

Life is going to throw you curve balls. Anxiety and other mental health issues are going to make it seem a million times worse, in the moment. But being able to trust that everything is working out as it should, embracing the calm, and having a positive mindset, are what will get you through nearly everything.

So what is a UDES?

Thank you for asking! Here is the job description that I developed. Though I may tweak a few things in the future.

The Unified Data Ecosystem Specialist is responsible for managing and enhancing the full data environment across systems, teams, and use cases. This role serves as the technical backbone for maintaining a seamless, efficient, and secure data ecosystem. By assessing infrastructure, identifying gaps, and implementing scalable solutions, the Specialist ensures that data is accessible, high-quality, and aligned with organizational strategy.

Key responsibilities:

  • Evaluate, solution, and optimize the flow, storage, and governance of data across platforms.
  • Design and implement data ecosystem improvements that reduce friction, decrease costs, and increase usability.
  • Collaborate with data engineers, analysts, and business stakeholders to ensure systems support operational and strategic needs.
  • Monitor ecosystem health, performance, and data quality to proactively identify issues.
  • Review and advise on best practices for unified data lifecycle management.

I know where you are coming from. Many have called what I do by the title “Virtual Assistant,” but I feel I am much more than an “assistant.” I have over 25 years of experience “doing tasks or projects” vs. certification. I’m at a point where I am hard pressed to come up with a “title” beyond freelancer. Clients ask me to do various tasks or projects, and I either say, “I’m on it.” or “I don’t know how to do that, but let me see if I can figure it out.”
